Soda Ban

There has been a lot of talk about the ban of large sodas (16oz and more) in New York by Mayor Bloomberg. With all of this talk, I wanted to throw in my two cents.

While yes, there is definitely an epidemic when it comes to obesity, I don’t know if banning a substance like soda is really going to tackle the issue effectively. If a person wants a soda larger than 16oz, they will find a way to get it. Whether it is bringing their own soda from home that they purchased from the grocery store, or perhaps purchasing a soda at a restaurant, then on their way home they’ll stop at the gas station and purchase another soda.

Rather than banning a substance like soda, why not put all the time and effort into educating the public on the harms of soda and provide them with healthy alternatives. People will be able to make their own educated decisions if they are given all of the information from both sides.

Soda is filled with not so healthy ingredients like sugar, high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, and more. Would a person be more likely to stop drinking soda because the city is limiting the availability or because they know how much sugar they are actually consuming and what the harmful side effects may be? For example, a 12oz can of Coke has 39 grams of sugar, which is equal to about 10 teaspoons. If you bump that up to a 20oz Mountain Dew, it contains 77 grams of sugar which is equal to about 19 teaspoons of sugar. The American Heart Association recently came out with new guidelines for recommended sugar intake. The recommended sugar intake for adult women is 5 teaspoons (20 grams) of sugar per day, for adult men, it’s 9 teaspoons (36 grams) daily, and for children, it’s 3 teaspoons (12 grams) a day. By drinking one 12oz coke, we either exceed our sugar intake for the day or come VERY close, depending on your gender and age.

We can all agree that soda is not the best choice when it comes to beverages, so check out this article to find some healthy alternatives. By removing soda completely from your diet and replacing it with an alternative like water, you will experience weight loss, feel more energized over time without the help of stimulants, and more!
