Is Drinking Coffee The Right Choice For You

Benefits of Drinking Coffee

On some days when you are running low on energy, the best thing to help boost your energy is coffee. But is it the right choice for you? There are a lot of factors to take into account when it comes to coffee and the amount of caffeine you drink on a regular basis. Green Coffee Extract and caffeine have many health benefits such as:

  • Improved alertness
  • Increased concentration
  • Reduced muscle pain
  • Added antioxidants
  • Asthma relief

Risks of Drinking Coffee

However, before you start drinking gallons of coffee, take these risks into account:

  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Adrenal exhaustion
  • Amplified stress
  • Emotional disturbances

Coffee does offer a lot of health benefits, but sometimes the amount of caffeine you drink daily can outweigh the benefits. A cup of coffee can contain anywhere from 65 – 200 mg of caffeine. For most healthy adults, drinking between 200 – 300 mg per day is not harmful, and can give them that boost they need in the morning or mid-afternoon. However, when someone is a heavy caffeine user, consuming more than 500 – 600 mg of caffeine per day, it can cause issues long term as well as short-term. Short-term issues could be restlessness, insomnia, upset stomachs, and blood sugar swings.

Drinking Coffee Summary

What should you do if you really enjoy the taste of coffee, but not necessarily all the caffeine that is associated with it? There are a lot of alternatives to coffee such as herbal coffee and decaffeinated coffee. Sometimes limiting your amount of caffeine intake can actually help boost the effects of caffeine. For example, limit yourself to one cup of coffee per day in the morning. On the days where you really need that added energy boost, you’ll feel the effects of the 2nd cup of coffee much more than if you drink coffee throughout the day. The best way to find out what is best for you is by experimenting. Try different decaffeinated coffees, herbal coffees, different strengths of coffee, and more. Notate your mood and energy level throughout the day and you can see what really benefits you the most.

Exercises for Cold Weather

311366_3750201481114_128345210_nLast year my son and I ran a 5K together, our first one as a team 🙂 It was so much fun, and we both really want to do another one again soon. He’s such a little athlete that plays soccer 12 months out of the year and just loves to be moving. He’s such a motivation when it comes to health and wellness. I pretty much have to be healthy to keep up with him! He’s always  concerned about what he’s eating, doesn’t like candy very much, and knows what ingredients we’d like him to avoid (aspartame, HFCS, etc.). What a sweetie! But I’m biased. But when we ran our 5K last year, it was the first big snow storm of the year in Utah. It was cold, snowy, and we had a blast running in the storm. So what are some ways to stay in shape even if it’s cold outside:

  • Just get outside and go! My favorite thing about exercising in the cold weather is that I get to layer up and it’s easy to cool down a bit if you get overheated by removing one of your layers.
  • If you live near a ski resort, try snowboarding or skiing if you don’t do this already.
  • Snowshowing. If you have an area near by that is safe and covered in snow, strap on some snowshoes and go! Being out and about in a large field can give you a different perspective of the land when it is covered by snow. Try to remember what was there before it was completely covered.
  • If you absolutely HATE being cold, get a gym membership. Our local rec. center offers a pass for a family of 4 for around $45.00/month. This includes use of their gym, track, racquetball courts, and indoor pool. Most rec. centers offer a lot of items with their memberships, some can even include classes.
  • Have a workout buddy! If you are losing motivation fast, find a friend that is equally as motivated to start working out with. That way you won’t want to cancel on them and vice versa. Just because it’s the winter doesn’t mean you should become inactive. No hibernating here!
  • Cross country skiing. This is also fun if you have access to a large piece of snow-covered land. Who knows, you might see some animals out there that you won’t typically see when it’s a little warmer outside.
  • Snowball fight! Who says exercise has to be boring. Get you and your family out there and have a snowball fight! Or go sledding! Have you tried hiking up a big hill covered in snow. You’ll feel the burn in your legs quickly! Make the most of it and try running up the hills after you sled down.

What are you favorite ways to stay in shape when it’s cold outside?

Nutrition vs Medicine

4343293I was going to write an article about Nutrition vs Conventional Medicine, but while doing some research I came across this article, which pretty much summed everything up in a perfect manner, in my opinion. 🙂

  • Increased Employee Energy – No more lulls in energy around 2-3 pm!
  • Employee Weight Loss – Who doesn’t love when their employees are happy and healthy!
  • Less Sick Days Redeemed – That’s right, by becoming healthier, employees will be less sick throughout the year! Plus they’ll learn how to really take care of themselves and their bodies for optimum performance!
  • Lower Insurance Premiums – It’s simple! Unhealthy employees cost the company more money.
  • Increased Productivity – By increasing the energy and health of your employees, they will be able to stay focused during their entire shift.
  • Less Stress – If employees are healthier, they’ll be less stressed. Plus they’ll learn techniques to help them move past the negativity.

For more information in regards to the benefits of corporate wellness programs, you can visit the US Department of Health & Human Services Federal Occupational Health page at http://www.foh.hhs.gov/fedstrive/case.html. On this site, you’ll find some amazing facts about the benefits of wellness programs including:

  • An organization saves approximately $350 per employee per year by keeping healthy employees at low risk.
  • The number of working Americans who get “no exercise” is two times higher among those who have no access to workplace fitness programs.
  • An overweight employee annually costs their employer an additional $450 to $2500 in medical expenses and absences.

With the current statistics stating that approximately 2/3 of Americans are overweight or obese, this could be costing your company THOUSANDS!!! For example, if your company has 100 employees, that means 66 of your employees fit in this category. This could be costing you an additional $29,700 – $165,000 PER YEAR!!!!

1 1/2 tsp. olive oil
1 tsp. sea salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
2 TBSP lemon juice
1 TBSP Dijon mustard
1 TBSP chives
1 TBSP oregano

Seasonal Detox for Fall

Screen Shot 2013-04-30 at 12.22.50 PMOver the summer, I became quite lazy with my eating habits for both myself and the family. With Fall beginning on Sunday, I am determined to get back on track. We all fall off the wagon on occasion, but what makes each of us different is how we pick ourselves back up and hop back on. My husband and I started the Seasonal Fall Detox yesterday. Make sure you stay tuned on the Elite Health Coaching Facebook Page for updates on how the detox is going for us plus pictures of food that you can actually eat during this time.

The great thing about this detox guide is that there are 4 seasons of detoxes, so one every 3 months or so is great! Your body will definitely thank you. And while I won’t be posting my starting weight, I will let you all know how much weight I’ve lost while doing it. Some of the meals that we are going to have this week are:

  • Shrimp Salad
  • Grilled Shrimp with Spaghetti Squash and Spinach
  • Herbed Chicken with Roasted Vegetables
  • Salmon with Brussel Sprouts and Quinoa

In the detox guide, you’ll find the recipes for all of these plus many, many more! I provide recipes for 3 meals a day for a total of 7 days during the detox. This makes it easy so you don’t have to figure out what to eat, what to serve with it, and more. The less thinking and the less stressful, the easier to follow.

So please follow along on Facebook to see the photos of the actual foods you’ll be eating and also my progress. With these detoxes, you get to eat REAL food! No potions, pills, liquid diets, etc. Just real food made super simple! You can purchase the detox guide by clicking on the link here or also on Amazon or Kindle!
