What exactly is mental health? According to the University of Michigan, it means “mental health is the foundation of our thinking and communication skills, learning, emotional growth, resilience and self-esteem.” So what exactly is a mental health cleanse? We’ve all heard of detoxing our body to get rid of toxins, sugars, and more, but what about the negative things that have to do with our mentality, our thoughts, and our well-being.
To start a mental health cleanse, first focus on the things that are affecting your state of mind. Maybe you are unhappy at work, not eating well, not getting enough sleep, there are negative relationships, etc. Write down all of the things that are effecting you negatively. This may be hard and it may take a day or two to really hone in on the negativity. Once you have all of the negative items written down on a piece of paper, cross them off! This means you are done with them and you are ready to make a change!
Next, go through each item on the ‘negativity’ list and write down what you want to achieve. For example, if you are unhappy with your job, write down what you would change to make it a more positive experience. If you want more sleep, set a goal to get more sleep and write down exactly what steps you are going to take to achieve this. Here is a list for example:
Need more sleep
Focus on getting more sleep
- Turn off all electronics one hour before I intend to go to bed
- Have a cup of chamomile tea before bed
- Stop any large consumption of water 2 hours before bed
Now that I have a list and a goal, I can start working towards those goals. Some of them may not be as easy as others, but once you have a vision, don’t lose track.
